Stamp of an Actor: Cary Grant

"Insanity runs in my family, it practically gallops."

"We have our factory, which is called a stage. We make a product, we color it, we title it and we ship it out in cans."

"I'd like to have made one of those big splashy Technicolor musicals with Rita Hayworth."

"I have no plans to write an autobiography, I will leave that to others. I'm sure they will turn me into a homosexual or a Nazi spy or something else."

"Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant."

"My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can."

"Hollywood is very much like a streetcar. Once a new star is made and comes aboard, an old is edged out of the rear exit. There's room for only so many and no more."

"I have spent the greater part of my life fluctuating between Archie Leach and Cary Grant, unsure of each, suspecting each." Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach.

  1. Very nice idea Prashant, though perhaps with one small caveat as these are great quotes by Grant talking about himself and his career. However, one might argue that the first quote, which is from ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, doesn't belong with the others as it describes what the character 'Mortimer Brewster' feels about his ancestors, not Archie Leach abput his family from Bristol!

    Great post!

  2. Sergio, thanks for the insight. I picked the quotes at random from various sites including IMDb. While I didn't know the first quote was from ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (I can't say I have seen it), the reference to Archibald Leach was only in context of the last quote. But I see your point. I have posted a few celebrity stamps, of writers, actors and singers, over the past few months. They're a fun thing to do but by no means original.

  5. Ron, I intend to watch ARSENIC AND OLD LACE as soon as possible. I don't remember if I have seen this film but I have been hearing a lot about it.

  6. Cary Grant is a fine funny actor. The first quote reminds me of a line from Bringing Up Baby (referring to Grant's character, David Huxley): "I don't want another lunatic in the family, I've got lunatics enough already."

I'd like to see Arsenic and Old Lace too, plus to watch him in Hitchcock's films (I saw most of North by Northwest years ago).

  7. HKatz, thanks for writing. BRINGING UP BABY is another Grant film I must see again. I have lost count of the number of times I must have watched NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Movie channels in India, especially TCM, show this film week after week.
