The purpose of this magazine is to reintroduce you to horror...long LOST horror...long BURIED horror...HORROR that OUR era has never really KNOWN...
— From Prologue to a Scream
I have absolutely no clue about this horror magazine I discovered on Archive and promptly downloaded and read in one go. Known as Skywald Horror-Mood Magazine, the 68 pages are edited and written by Alan Hewetson and published by Israel Waldman and Herschel Waldman. Wiki says, "Skywald Publications was a 1970s publisher of black-and-white comics magazines, primarily the horror anthologies Nightmare, Psycho, and Scream. It also published a small line of comic books and other magazines."
I liked everything about the first issue of Scream from the imaginative cover and contents page and the black-and-white illustrations that narrate short disjointed macabre tales to the humour behind the horror and the description of Alan Hewetson as "the insane founder of the lunatic Mood-Team and corrupt editor-writer for Scream magazine."
If you know more about this magazine, SCREAM in comments.
Meanwhile, you can download it right here. You'll find other issues too.

I bet Todd Mason can fill you in.
ReplyDeletePatti, I bet he can and I hope he does.
DeleteMore up your street than mine, I think Prashant! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteCol, not really for I don't read horror fiction as often as I read other genres. This one was unusual, I'll admit.
DeleteNever heard of it, but thanks for the link. I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Charles. I think you'll like it and I'd certainly like to know your views on it.
DeleteThanks for the link Prashant - I shall definitely investigate when I get home (if I dare ...).
ReplyDeleteSergio, you're welcome. I'm familiarising myself with horror, sf, and fantasy fiction and I have a long way to go before I can talk blindly about these genres.
DeleteSkywald has a very low reputation among horror/comics folks who've read their productions, but I haven't yet...so, thanks for the links! There certainly has been no shortage of weaker horror comics, though some of those have had a certain insane vigor to them...glad they've been fun, so far, Prashant!
ReplyDeleteThe Bare*Bones guys will probably have a lot to say about Skywald, if you asked them...

Todd, thanks for your inputs and the link to Barebonesez. This is a genre where I wouldn't know the reputation of a book or comic book. I have come across some pretty weird stuff in horror fiction some of which I have passed off for lack of adequate knowledge. The internet tells you a lot without really explaining much.
DeleteA wonderful cover on this magazine, Prashant. I love skulls and skeletons, although this one is almost too realistic for me. Horror is not my thing at all, but if I found a paper copy of this book, I would buy it for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt is, Tracy, and as you point out, realistic too. I doubt I'll find a physical copy of the horror comic-book in my neck of the woods. I read horror books occasionally though not "The Exorcist" kind of horror. The film was bad enough.
