I am a huge fan of ON THE WATERFRONT the Budd Schulberg novel Kazan directed and in which Marlon Brando won his first Academy Award. Kazan's name on a film usually meant a 'certain' sort of film. Robust films meant, I think, for the young - all that truth and vitality flung around.

But I've never read any Kazan books. And while this one doesn't sound like my sort of thing, still, I enjoyed reading your review and the little appealing sample of Kazan's literary style.

But I am also reminded that Kazan allegedly ratted out his friends before the House Un-American Activities - i.e. Joe McCarthy and his gang. Reason why his name became a sort of anathema in Hollywood. Kazan will remain forever a controversial figure but his impact on stage and film in the 40s and 50s is just too important to ignore. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
